West Side residents and businesses are continuing to rally against the proposed annexation of their property by the city of Evansville. For a brief history of this website, please read more here. In addition, there are numerous web postings on the West Side annexation topic and it has also been covered extensively by the Evansville Courier-Press.

ANNEXATION OR CONSOLIDATION

6/15/2010 - We have been very watchful of the findings of the Evansville City-County Government Reorganization Committee, and are pleased that they have decided to take more time to decide the framework of a new government. In the rush to get the referendum on the November ballot, the various sub-committees were unable to formulate a plan that would be acceptable to the voters, and more notably, faced opposition from elected officials in the City and County.

This continues to leave open the door of opportunity for annexation in 2011, just as happened in Nashville in 1958. In that case, when the county residents of Davidson County defeated a consolidation referendum, the then-Mayor began to implement plans to annex 42 square miles and 82,000 residents into the City of Nashville. The affected residents, who apparently were annexed unaware, saw their property taxes increase, but received few, if any, city services. Outraged that they were now living inside the city with no additional city services, the residents were then practically forced to pursue consolidation just to get properly represented. We will not be caught unaware. The annexation issue is not over, and we will be watchful in the coming months, and will keep the residents of Perry Township and Union Township advised through this website as we are able. Check back often for updates. Additionally, check out the City-County Observer, a great source of ongoing information on this issue.
