"NEW" WEST SIDE ANNEXATION PLAN
As Announced by the Mayor's Office on July 1, 2009

On December 15, 2008, the Evansville mayor’s office announced the city’s intention to annex a 2,142 acre area of West Side properties, proposed as city ordinance 2008-20. See details of the original proposal here.

On July 1, 2009, the Mayor announced an intention to modify these boundaries, reducing the number of parcels from 1,037 to 140. The size of the proposed annexation area was reduced from 2,142 acres down to 326 acres. The new annexation boundary concentrates on annexing primarily the businesses along Weston Road and Pearl Drive, and the apartments at Lakewood West, Mission Viejo, and Copper Creek.

The reason for the change stated by the Mayor and Evansville City Council centered on public opposition to the annexation. The cost of extending sewer systems into the original area was also cited.

Evansville Mayor Weinzapfel said, "After a public meeting and conversations with city council members, we thought it was important to go ahead and scale back the area we were looking to annex."

City Council Chairman B. J. Watts added, "We were looking to do what the people we represent want, and until you get a chance to listen to them in a public hearing, you don't know."
