WSAA GOALS

It is a primary goal of the West Siders Against Annexation to oppose annexation of the West Side by the city of Evansville. The original annexation proposal was released by the Mayor's office on December 15, 2008. A modified West Side Annexation proposal was announced by the Mayor's office on July 1, 2009.

The WSAA's primary course will follow the remonstration process outlined in Indiana state law. Indiana law regarding annexations and remonstrations is described in the Indiana Code Title 36, Article 4, Chapter 3 and can be reviewed in detail here.

As an abbreviated summary, the process includes:

  • Collection of signatures opposing annexation on a petition, called a remonstrance. A minimum of 65% of the number of affected property owners OR the signatures of affected property owners representing a minimum of 75% of the assessed valuation is required.
  • Public hearing to voice opinion and/or concern about the annexation,
  • Acceptance or rejection of the annexation ordinance by the City Council,
  • If the annexation ordinance is accepted, a filing of the remonstrance in court,
  • Court hearing to officially decide the matter.

In a more general sense, WSAA is committed to supporting opposition to West Side annexation, or similar scenarios that would increase West Side residential taxes without both desired and fair consideration for its residents.
